A Heartwarming Last Moment: The Love Story of an Elderly Chinese Couple
A photo of an elderly Chinese couple, both in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU), holding hands and looking at each other with tears in their eyes, has gone viral around the world. This touching image has moved millions of people everywhere, reminding us all of the power of love that can last a lifetime.
The couple, Feng Ming and Zhang Ping, had been married for 66 years, and their story is one of love, devotion, and heartbreaking final moments. This powerful photograph was taken by Wang Yanfang, the head nurse at Yinzhou Hospital in Zhejiang Province, eastern China, who was deeply moved by the couple’s bond.
Feng’s Health Declines
Feng Ming, 92, had been in the hospital after suffering heart failure. Sadly, his health worsened rapidly. As more of his organs began to fail, he also developed a serious lung infection. Soon, he was unable to speak and had to rely on a life support machine to stay alive.
Doctors and family members knew that Feng’s time was running out. His family had to make the painful decision to stop the life-saving treatments and bring him home to spend his final moments there.
But Feng had one last wish before he left the hospital—he wanted to see his beloved wife, Zhang Ping. At the time, Zhang, 95, was also in the hospital. She was staying on a different floor, receiving treatment for a broken femur.
Feng and Zhang had been married for more than six decades, and their love for each other had never wavered, even as they faced these challenging times.
A Special Request
Wang Yanfang, the head nurse, understood how important this moment was for the couple. Though visiting hours for the ICU were strictly limited to 3:00 pm to 3:30 pm, Wang knew that Feng’s condition couldn’t wait that long. The nurse made a special arrangement to allow Feng and Zhang to meet.
Wang made sure that Zhang was carefully transferred from her room on the 14th floor to the ICU on the third floor. Zhang, who had been in pain herself, was moved on a stretcher to fulfill her husband’s last wish. As they wheeled her into the ICU, the couple was finally reunited.
A Last Goodbye
The moment was emotional beyond words. Zhang, still holding onto her strength, reached out and grabbed Feng’s hand. She spoke to him in their local dialect, comforting him with her words: “Don’t worry about me. Rest assured that I can take good care of myself.”

Wang, who witnessed this heartfelt scene, recalled that Feng began to cry when he heard his wife’s comforting words. “We made an exception for the elderly couple to meet so that this touching moment could happen and be preserved,” Wang said. “I am grateful that we made the right choice.”
Feng passed away peacefully a few hours later, in the comfort of his own home, knowing that he had one last chance to hold his wife’s hand and hear her voice. His final moments were filled with the love they had shared for over six decades.
True Love That Lasts a Lifetime
The story of Feng Ming and Zhang Ping is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. It’s devastating to think of losing someone after a lifetime of memories, but it’s also beautiful to know that they had been through so much together and still held on to their love.
Even in his last moments, Feng was surrounded by the woman he had loved for all those years. Their connection was undeniable, even as life came to an end.
Their story shows us that true love doesn’t fade with time. It remains strong, even when life is difficult and death is near. Feng and Zhang’s love was a beautiful reminder of the deep bond that can last through thick and thin.
This photo and the story behind it have touched millions. It makes us stop and think about the people in our own lives and how much we cherish them. True love doesn’t need words—it’s in the small gestures, the hand-holding, and the quiet moments spent together.
