Often, when children are supposed to go to bed, they suddenly think of many things they want to do. Evening discussions are common in most families. A 60-second trick is said to help.
It’s a phenomenon most parents are familiar with: as soon as the kids are supposed to go to bed, they become most active. Suddenly, they remember a thousand things that absolutely need to be done before sleeping. This often leads to nerve-wracking discussions.
However, this power struggle can be avoided. According to family guide Kristin Gallant and child therapist Deena Margolin, who run the Instagram account “Big Little Feelings” together, the so-called “60-second trick” helps.
It is supposed to help kids transition to bedtime and shift from “power struggle mode” to “cooperation mode.”
In the video above, you can see what time your kids should go to bed.
Why Kids Should Bring Their Toys to Bed
The method is quite simple. The two women advise: “Let the child bring their toys to bed.” This bed should ideally not be in the child’s bedroom. In a box or homemade bed, the child can then put their toys to rest, say “good night” to them, and cover them with a washcloth or napkin.
Maintaining Control Over the Situation
According to the experts, this ritual can help children transition from playtime to bedtime more easily. Usually, they are also tired once all their dolls and stuffed animals are in bed.
Additionally, it gives them a sense of control over the situation. This is generally important to get children to cooperate. Gallant and Margolin also suggest letting children choose which pajamas they want to wear, which stuffed animal can go to bed with them, or which story will be read last before sleeping.
Does the 60-Second Trick Really Work for Falling Asleep?
The followers of “Big Little Feelings” are mostly enthusiastic about the 60-second trick. Someone writes: “This trick prevented a total meltdown last night.”
Another says: “We do this often, and it really works!” However, the term “60-second trick” might be a bit of an exaggeration. Some followers also note that the method requires additional time – but it saves you from the discussions.
