AFTER DINNER: Why a Walk Helps

Share this:

After dinner, relax on the couch? Better not! Here are five good reasons to take a walk after dinner.

After a big evening meal, physical activity is probably the last thing on your mind. However, a bit of exercise after eating has many benefits, especially in the form of a walk. It’s proven that walking after a meal positively affects our health. This is partly because walking increases the release of endorphins and lowers stress levels. Here are five more good reasons not to lie on the couch after dinner but to take a stroll in the fresh air instead.

Better Digestion

Constipation, bloating, or heartburn are typical symptoms that can occur after an evening meal. A short walk is a good way to alleviate these. Gentle movement stimulates bowel activity and promotes the production of digestive juices. Especially after a heavy meal, this can help you feel better more quickly.

Reduced Risk of Heart Disease

Exercise can demonstrably lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, thus reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, or heart attack. Studies even show that a 10 to 15-minute walk after eating is more effective for heart health than a long workout.

Helps Maintain Weight

Regular exercise is not only one of the most important pillars of a healthy life but also one of the most effective ways to manage body weight. A walk right after a meal can help maintain or reduce weight. Additionally, exercise can help curb cravings, so you might not reach for the snack drawer after dinner.

Regulates Blood Sugar Levels

Cravings also arise from unstable blood sugar levels. A walk right after a meal can help stabilize this. Exercise improves glucose uptake into the cells, and the insulin produced by the body works more efficiently. This lowers blood sugar levels. A stable blood sugar level also means fewer energy slumps and a generally more stable energy level throughout the day.

Better Sleep

Those who spend time outdoors during the day can fall asleep better in the evening. Light physical activity makes the body pleasantly tired, facilitating sleep and promoting deep sleep. Fresh air can also help clear the mind and relax. Regular exercise also lowers cortisol levels – less cortisol in the blood means the body can relax and unwind better. Moreover, a walk helps regulate the natural day-night rhythm.
