Martha Stewart is a beloved figure with fans all over the world. However, she has recently faced criticism for a social media post during her trip to Greenland, which some have called “tone-deaf.”
Earlier this year, the 82-year-old received praise for posing in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue in May, but her latest Instagram post hasn’t been as well-received.
On Tuesday, August 29, Stewart shared a picture from her cruise along Greenland’s east coast. In the photo, she’s sipping a cocktail and captioned it:
“The first Zodiac tour from Swan Hellenic Cruises comes to an end as we enter a breathtaking fjord on Greenland’s east coast. In fact, we managed to catch a tiny iceberg for our cocktails this evening.”
Though Stewart likely meant the post to be light-hearted, it quickly sparked backlash from fans who found it insensitive to use a “tiny iceberg” for her drink, given concerns about climate change.
One Instagram user commented, “Martha, the ice caps are melting. Don’t put them in your drink.”
Another person wrote, “Generally, I love Martha and her excesses because she’s all about beautiful homes, gardens, and food, but it’s a bit tone deaf for wealthy white people to drink their iceberg cocktails while the planet is burning.”
Someone else added, “So millionaires take vacations to melting icebergs, scoop them up, and use them to keep their cocktails icy as the climate warms due to the wealth of a few thousand people. That sounds like something from a dystopian novel. Can’t make this up, haha.”
Another user said, “Even with global warming and ice caps disappearing, we still need glacier ice for cocktails? Discuss tone deaf. Been a lover for years, but lately, when I’m having trouble buying groceries, I’ve seen enough caviar that I’m out.”
In contrast, Stewart made headlines in May by posing for Sports Illustrated’s cover at 81, wearing provocative bikinis. She revealed her strict health regimen leading up to the shoot.
In an interview with Today, Stewart said, “I didn’t starve myself, but I didn’t eat any bread or pasta for a couple of months. It was amazing that I went to Pilates every other day, and I’m still going because it’s that good.
In any case, I lead a clean life that includes a nutritious diet, regular exercise, decent skincare, and other habits.”
At a keynote address in Las Vegas, Stewart discussed the positive reaction to the “authentic” cover, saying, “The response was really encouraging because it gave women of all ages the confidence to believe that they could succeed too.”
