The Night of Courage
Sometimes, just being in the right place at the right time isn’t enough. It takes real bravery to stand up for those who are weak and in need.
For four young boys—Arnaud Nimenya, Carsyn Wright, James Hielema, and Starlyn Rives-Perez—what started as a simple night of skating turned into an unforgettable adventure that would change their lives forever.
One evening, the boys decided to skate in an underground parking lot. As they were having fun, something unusual happened. They spotted an older man, dressed sharply in a nice suit, pulling a young girl who looked about fifteen years old.
But she was stumbling around and clearly drunk. The boys felt a wave of unease wash over them. “Something is really off here,” Arnaud whispered to the others, and they all nodded in agreement.
The girl was in bad shape. One of the boys remembered, “She was screaming and yelling. It was so sad to see.” It was obvious that all she wanted was to escape, but she was dirty and had scratches on her arms, as if she had been through a tough time.
When the boys approached her, hoping to help, the man claimed to be her father. The girl didn’t say a word to confirm this, and that made the boys hesitate. Carsyn said, “You really don’t want to imagine the worst of someone like them.
You just brush it off and hope for the best because you don’t want that situation to be real.”
But something didn’t feel right. They couldn’t shake the feeling that he was lying.
So, fueled by their instincts, they decided to check back one more time. What they found shocked them to their core. The young woman was being assaulted by the man, powerless to defend herself.
“I froze when I saw that. It was like my mind went blank,” said Nimenya. “You don’t know what to do.” The boys knew they couldn’t just stand by and let this happen. They ran toward the attacker, adrenaline coursing through their veins, pushing them to act.
The man was quick. He started to flee, trying to escape the parking lot. “He thought he could get away from us,” Nimenya said. “I remember he shoved me aside. I thought, ‘I can’t let him do this!’”
The boys were determined; they weren’t going to let this man off the hook. As they chased him, he picked up one of their skateboards and swung it at them. A fierce fight broke out, but just then, the police arrived, sirens blaring, lights flashing.
Once the cops were on the scene, they were able to secure the girl and arrest the man. The boys finally felt relief wash over them. She was safe now.
As the dust settled, the police recognized the heroism of these young men. They decided to honor Arnaud, Carsyn, James, and Starlyn for their bravery by inviting them to the Chief’s Awards Gala. There, they received the recognition they deserved, standing proudly in front of their community as heroes.
The chief spoke to the crowd, saying, “The way these young men handled this situation makes us very proud. They risked their own lives to protect a vulnerable woman. You are true idols and inspirations to us all.”
The boys blushed, feeling the weight of their actions. They had faced danger but had also shown the world that courage and compassion could shine through even the darkest moments.
