Ever thought a single penny could change your life? Well, a certain penny might be able to! Recently, reports from Coin Trackers, the New York Post, KHOU, and Daily Mail UK have highlighted an incredibly rare and valuable 1943 copper wheat penny. If you’re lucky enough to find one in pristine condition, it could be worth over $85,000!
Here’s the backstory: in 1943, the United States was conserving copper for World War II, and regular pennies were made out of steel and coated in zinc to protect against rust.
Coin Week details, “Because copper was needed for purposes relating to World War II, all 1943 cents were planned to be struck on zinc-coated steel planchets.” This made the 1943 steel penny unique for its time – but there’s an even rarer twist.
Somehow, during production, a few leftover copper blanks mistakenly went through the minting process, resulting in the ultra-rare 1943 copper penny. These “mistake coins” are now worth thousands of dollars to collectors. According to Coin Trackers, while the best-preserved versions can bring in as much as $85,000, even slightly worn ones are selling for around $60,000.
Saul Teichman, an authority on U.S. Mint errors, explains the appeal: “1943 copper cents have a special cachet with collectors. As for market value, the 1943 cents sell for much more than other errors struck around the same time.” He adds that even though other errors from the World War II era are scarcer, the 1943 copper pennies’ allure makes them stand out, fetching significantly higher prices.
But with so much money at stake, there’s a downside – fake pennies are flooding the market. Coin Trackers warns that many counterfeiters will file down the number 8 on a 1948 copper penny to make it resemble a 1943 copper penny. Some even take regular steel pennies and coat them with copper to trick buyers.
Fortunately, there’s an easy way to test for authenticity. As Daily Mail UK puts it, “A solid copper penny will not stick to a magnet, while a steel penny with copper plating will.”
So why wait? Check your collection or that old jar of coins lying around. You might just be holding one of these rare and valuable pennies! Share this tip with friends and family, too – they might have hidden treasure in their spare change.
