We’ve all had it happen: a special night out that gets spoiled by an unfortunate encounter. Amelia’s recent story about her dining experience raises some important questions about tipping, good service, and how to handle tricky situations.
Subject: Why I Took Back My Tip After the Waitress’s Rude Behavior
Amelia writes: “Last night, my husband and I went to a nice restaurant to celebrate his big promotion. Everything was going great until the very end when our waitress completely ruined the evening with her nasty attitude.
When the check came, I left a $10 tip on an $85 bill. But as the waitress picked up the money, she sneered and said, ‘Ten bucks? This isn’t the 1950s anymore!’ I was stunned by her sarcastic tone, and my husband was just as shocked.
I was already irritated, so I responded, ‘Excuse me? I think $10 on an $85 bill is a fair tip.’ The waitress rolled her eyes and shot back, ‘The standard tip these days is 20%. Do you not know how to calculate that?’ Her entitlement and rudeness made my blood boil.
I couldn’t hold back and snapped, ‘With an attitude like that, you don’t deserve a tip at all!’ I quickly grabbed the $10 bill back from the table. The waitress then started yelling at me, throwing insults, and causing a scene that caught the attention of everyone around us. My husband was mortified.
Finally, the manager stepped in and removed the furious waitress, who kept shouting at me as she was being taken away. We ended up leaving without leaving any tip at all.
Looking back, maybe I overreacted, but her dismissive and disrespectful behavior was just too much to handle. Now, I’m caught in the middle of a debate about whether I should have just let it go instead of making a scene. What do you think?”
