Imane Khelif’s dad breaks his silence after Olympic boxer’s gender controversy

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif stirred up a storm of controversy at the 2024 Paris Olympics when her opponent, Angela Carini of Italy, unexpectedly left their fight.

Khelif, who was born female and identifies as a woman, faced heated debate over her right to compete.

Recently, her father decided to speak out.

During the boxing match on August 1, Carini quit early, citing a painful nose injury as her reason for stopping.

In defense of his 25-year-old daughter, Amar Khelif spoke to Reuters, expressing pride in her accomplishments. He said, “Having a daughter like her is an honor because she’s a champion. She’s brought me honor, and I support her. I hope she wins a medal in Paris. Imane has loved sports since she was 6 years old.”

To address doubts about her gender, Amar Khelif showed what Reuters called an “official-looking document.” He stated, “This is our family’s official document, dated May 2, 1999, Imane Khelif, female. It’s right here; you can read it. This document tells the truth.”

The controversy led Carini to apologize publicly to Khelif on August 2, speaking to Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, as reported by CNN. Carini said, “I apologize to my opponent. If the IOC says she can fight, I respect their decision.

I didn’t mean to cause this. I want to apologize to her and everyone. I was upset because my Olympics were ruined.”

Khelif herself spoke out, urging people to stop bullying athletes. She told SNTV, “Bullying can ruin people’s thoughts, spirit, and mind. It divides people. That’s why I’m asking people to stop.”
