Keanu Reeves, one of the most beloved stars of his time, is known for being a genuinely nice guy. It seems like no one has a bad word to say about him. So when he shared some bad news recently, his fans were naturally concerned.
What happened? Let’s find out.
At 59, Keanu revealed that he had broken his kneecap while on set. You might expect that from one of his intense action films like The Matrix or John Wick, but this injury happened in the least expected way.

It all came up when Stephen Colbert asked him, “So, what happened? How did this happen to you?”
Keanu, ever the cool guy, replied with a grin, “No one got to me. Accident got to me.”
Colbert, always curious, wanted to know more. “Did you jump off a building? Roll over sharp objects? What were you doing?”
Keanu shook his head and laughed. “No, Stephen. I was just walking into a room—my dressing room, actually. Here’s what went down.”
He went on to explain that the injury occurred while filming a scene for the upcoming comedy Good Fortune, alongside Aziz Ansari and Seth Rogen. After spending some time in a freezing plunge pool, the three actors had just finished up when Keanu started doing what he called the “cold shuffle” to warm up. The room had padded carpeting, but while he was shuffling around, his foot got caught on something.

Keanu got up from his seat on Colbert’s show to demonstrate what happened, showing how his knee gave out. “I spiked, man. I spiked hard,” he said, slamming his hand into the desk to mimic the impact. “I just drove it right into the ground.”
He shook his head, almost in disbelief. “My kneecap—my patella—it shattered like a broken potato chip. And at first, I didn’t even realize it. But once my knee popped, I knew something was wrong.”
Then, with his typical laid-back humor, Keanu said, “Comedy is tough, man.”
Colbert, laughing, said, “But Aziz and Seth weren’t exactly filming an action movie, right?”

Keanu grinned. “Nope. It was all comedy.”
“Welcome to my life,” Colbert joked.
Back in January, Keanu had been spotted on set, using crutches and keeping an ice pack on his injured knee. The injury didn’t slow him down much, though.
Good Fortune is a special project because it marks Aziz Ansari’s debut as a director. The film also stars Sandra Oh and Keke Palmer, and Aziz didn’t just direct—he co-wrote and co-produced the film too.

Even though Keanu’s injury wasn’t from a wild stunt or dangerous fight scene, it just goes to show that accidents can happen anywhere—even while doing a silly shuffle! But, as always, Keanu handled it with his signature good humor.
