In a new miniseries, Kristen Stewart is set to take on the role of Sally Ride, the first American woman in space.
Kristen Stewart, 34, will become an astronaut in her first major series project, “The Challenger.” In the new miniseries, the “Twilight” and “Spencer” star will portray the late Sally Ride (1951-2012), according to the industry portal “Deadline.” Ride was a physicist and astronaut, making her first space flight in 1983 at the age of 32, becoming the first American woman and the third woman overall in space.
The miniseries is based on the book “The New Guys” by Meredith Bagby, who developed the material alongside Kyra Sedgwick, 58, and Valerie Stadler through Big Swing Productions. Also involved are Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners and Stewart’s Nevermind.
“Three Girls with a Dream”
Writer Maggie Cohn, known for her work on “American Crime Story,” “The Staircase,” and “Narcos: Mexico,” will be responsible for the script and will serve as the showrunner, according to the report. The current progress of the project is unclear, but Sedgwick has stated that she has been working with Bagby and Stadler at Big Swing since 2017. They are “three girls with a dream” and it took them over a year to get the book to Stewart.
No further cast members for “The Challenger” have been announced yet. It is also unclear where the project will ultimately be shown. According to Sedgwick, they are currently close to securing a deal. The release is reportedly planned to be near the anniversary of the Challenger disaster on January 28, 1986.
