When Harry bought the old farm for just a thousand dollars, he had no idea the seller was trying to cheat him. But soon, he stumbled upon something hidden in the attic—a stash of money and a letter that would change his life forever.
Sebastian, an elderly man of 71, had spent his whole life on that farm. Every morning, he would wake up, do some light exercises, and then head out to the fields. On this particular day, he was out in the hot sun, harvesting corn. His straw basket, old and worn, was filled with fresh ears of corn, which he planned to sell at the market to make a little money.
Sebastian had lived on the farm for as long as he could remember. He had married the love of his life, and together, they raised three sons—James, Fred, and Kyle. Life wasn’t always easy, but they managed. However, when his wife died unexpectedly, Sebastian’s world collapsed. Taking care of his three boys became his only reason to keep going.
As time passed, his sons grew up and left the farm to start their own lives. Sebastian didn’t mind being alone; he kept busy with the farm’s daily demands. But one day, while he was working in the field, something went terribly wrong. His head spun, his vision blurred, and he collapsed. Fortunately, his neighbor saw him fall and rushed to help.
“Sebastian, are you okay?” the neighbor shouted, voice filled with panic.
When Sebastian woke up, he found himself lying in his neighbor’s house, feeling confused. He had no idea how he got there.
“You fainted, Sebastian,” the neighbor explained. “You really should see a doctor.”
Sebastian was reluctant, but he went to see the doctor, who ran several tests. The news was devastating. “I’m sorry, Mr. Sebastian,” the doctor said softly. “The cancer has spread too far. There’s nothing we can do. You only have a few weeks left. I suggest you spend time with your family.”
Sebastian wasn’t afraid for himself. His only concern was for his farm. “Who will take care of the land when I’m gone?” he wondered. That evening, he called each of his sons, hoping they would return to help him. But none of them offered to come. They were too wrapped up in their own lives.
As the weeks passed, Sebastian grew weaker. He became bedridden and could no longer care for the farm. His sons hired a nurse to look after him, but still, they didn’t visit.
“Dad, we’ve arranged for someone to take care of you,” James said over the phone. “We’re too busy to come ourselves, but the nurse will handle everything.”
But that wasn’t what Sebastian wanted. He longed to see his sons one last time. He called them again, pleading with them. “Please, take care of the farm after I’m gone. It’s been in the family for generations, and it will bring you prosperity if you work hard.”
The next day, Sebastian passed away—alone in his home, without any of his sons by his side. After his funeral, the farm was left to fall apart. His sons ignored it, too caught up in their own lives. Months passed, and the farm became a shadow of what it once was.
One day, James got a call from a lawyer. Apparently, their father had taken out a loan to buy supplies for the farm, and now, the sons were responsible for paying it off.
“Dad never told us about this!” James exclaimed in frustration. With no money to cover the debt, the brothers decided to sell the farm. But when they arrived, they were horrified by what they saw. The house was falling apart, the fields were overgrown, and it looked like no one had touched the place in ages.
“Who’s going to buy this mess?” Fred asked, shaking his head. “There’s no way we’ll get a decent price.”
They had no choice but to lower the price and hope for a buyer. They placed an ad in the newspaper, carefully editing the photos to make the farm look better than it was. Soon, they got a call from a man named Harry, who seemed interested in the farm.
“I’m selling it cheap because I have to move for work,” James lied when Harry asked about the low price. He pressured Harry into buying the farm sight unseen for only $1,000.
The brothers were thrilled, thinking they had pulled a fast one on Harry. But Harry wasn’t a fool. He had recently been cheated out of his inheritance by his own sister, and he was determined to make something of this new opportunity.
When Harry moved in with his wife and kids, the condition of the farm shocked them. “How are we going to afford to fix all this?” his wife asked, clearly worried.
“Don’t worry,” Harry said confidently. “We’ll work hard, fix up the place, and turn it into something special.”
And that’s exactly what they did. Harry and his family poured everything they had into restoring the farm. They planted new crops, bought livestock, and little by little, the land came back to life. The farm started to turn a profit within months, and it wasn’t long before it was thriving.
One day, while cleaning out the attic, Harry stumbled upon an old cabinet. Hidden inside was a black plastic bag. When he opened it, bundles of cash spilled out, along with a folded letter. Harry picked up the letter and began reading:
“If you’re reading this, it means my sons have sold the farm, ignoring my last wish. I am Sebastian, the previous owner. I hoped my sons would care for this land after I passed, but they chose not to. I leave this money for whoever buys the farm. Use it to restore the land and make it flourish. My dream was to see this farm prosper again. Please take care of my legacy.”
Harry couldn’t believe what he had just read. The money was more than enough to pay off the debt, with plenty left over to keep fixing the farm. Instead of keeping it for himself, he honored Sebastian’s wish, using the money to make the farm even better.
He renamed the property “William and Sebastian’s Farm,” in honor of Sebastian and his own grandfather. The farm became a huge success, drawing people from nearby towns to buy fresh produce, eggs, and milk. It became a centerpiece of the community, and Harry’s profits grew beyond anything he had imagined.
A year later, word of the farm’s success reached James, Fred, and Kyle. They came to see it for themselves and were stunned by what Harry had accomplished.
“We should’ve listened to Dad,” James said, full of regret.
Desperate for money, the brothers tried to convince Harry to share some of the profits with them. But Harry refused. “I bought this farm, worked hard, and paid off the debt. You had your chance,” he said firmly.
Realizing they couldn’t argue, the brothers reluctantly accepted Harry’s offer to work on the farm as employees. Through hard work, they finally understood the value of the land and their father’s efforts.
Meanwhile, Harry passed on his knowledge to his own children, ensuring that the legacy of the farm, and of Sebastian, would live on for generations to come.
Lessons from the story:
- Hard work always pays off. Harry’s dedication turned a neglected farm into a thriving business.
- Teach your children the value of hard work and money. Sebastian’s sons only learned to appreciate their father’s effort after they worked the land themselves.
