When we share our lives online, we invite criticism from strangers. Matt and Brittany Montgomery know this all too well. They love sharing photos of their life together on social media, but some people have responded with harsh comments. Instead of letting it get to them, they’ve responded with wit and grace, showing the world how important it is to stay true to yourself.
Matt and Brittany’s story might seem like a typical love story at first, but there’s one thing that makes them stand out: Matt is much bigger than Brittany. But that’s never been an issue for them—only for those on the outside looking in.
Brittany has faced challenges all her life when it comes to feeling accepted. Her controlling parents never made her feel truly safe, and their conversations often left her feeling empty inside. Over time, this led her to dislike her appearance and become self-conscious.
As a plus-size woman, Brittany encountered two types of men: those who were attracted to her curves and those who wanted her to lose weight. After many disappointing experiences in dating, she started to think love just wasn’t in the cards for her.
But fate had other plans. In August 2020, Brittany met Matt Montgomery online. Even though they looked different physically, their connection was undeniable. “At first, I was a little hesitant,” Brittany admitted. “In past relationships, guys threatened to break up with me if I didn’t start dieting or try to lose weight. It really affected my confidence, and I even tried working out to change my size.”
Despite these doubts, Brittany and Matt quickly realized they were meant for each other. On January 30, 2022, Matt proposed, and they began planning their future together.
Even though they were comfortable with each other, they knew that others might not understand their relationship. “People comment on Instagram and say that I’m not big enough or man enough for her,” Matt shared. “I also notice people staring when we walk down the street.”
But no matter how many people criticize or don’t understand their relationship, Matt and Brittany remain deeply in love.
Matt has also had his own struggles in the past, especially when it came to dating women of “normal” size. But with Brittany, he felt something different—something real. He knew she was his soulmate because of how she made him feel.
“You are worthy, you are deserving of infinite love every single day and more,” Matt recently wrote, expressing his love for Brittany without holding back. “I know we were meant to be together by the way you look at me and feel the same way I do about you.”
In a powerful response to the critics, Matt posted a picture of him and Brittany on social media, captioned with some of the hurtful comments people have made about other couples. It was a beautiful way to show the depth of their love and to silence the doubters.
Brittany and Matt hope to make relationships between people of different sizes more accepted. “I wish mixed-weight relationships were more common and more the norm,” Brittany said, expressing her hope for the future.
The couple recently shared some exciting news—they’re expecting their second child, a baby girl named Lakelyn, in September 2023. We wish them all the best!
In the end, when it comes to finding true love and following your heart, there are no rules. We should all strive to love and embrace one another, no matter what.
