One day, a man walked into the bank with a dolly full of jugs. Everyone turned to look as they heard the jingling sound of coins. This man was Otha Anders, known as the “Coin Master.”
Otha Anders worked as a supervisor for the Jackson School Board. Suspended children were sent to him, and they grew to love him.
While his family always supported him, Anders had a unique hobby that turned into a passion – collecting pennies.

Anders believed that finding a penny was a sign from God, reminding him to be grateful. “I came to believe that finding a misplaced or dropped penny served as an extra divine prompt to always express gratitude,” Anders told USA Today.
He prayed over every penny he found, seeing them as little blessings.
For forty-five years, Anders collected pennies and stored them in five-gallon plastic water jugs. He thought he might have a fortune saved up, but he was about to find out for sure.

On the day he decided to cash in his collection, bank staff had a blast helping him. They used an ax and hammer to break open the jugs and spent five hours counting the pennies with a coin counter.
The final tally? Anders had saved $5,136.14 in pennies!
That’s about $114.4 per year over forty-five years. Who would have thought that collecting pennies could add up to the cost of a used car?

Anders used the money to pay off a recent dental bill, feeling good about putting his pennies to a worthwhile use. He also used some of the money for a family vacation and donated to his church.
So next time you see a penny on the ground, think of Otha Anders and his amazing collection.
