During Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s first trip abroad since stepping away from their royal roles, the Duchess of Sussex found herself reflecting on the highs and lows of motherhood in a touching way.
While visiting the Lightway Academy in Nigeria during their three-day tour on May 10, Meghan had an emotional conversation with her 2-year-old daughter, Princess Lilibet, or Lili, which she later shared with a group of kindergarten students.
Standing before the children, Meghan began to tell them about her daughter. “Our daughter, Lili, she’s much, much tinier than you guys,” Meghan said with a warm smile, as the children looked on. She explained that Lili was nearing her third birthday, and just weeks ago, she had noticed something fascinating about her daughter’s view of the world.
Meghan continued, “A few weeks ago, all she could see when she looked at me was my eye’s reflection.” The class listened closely, captivated by the insight into the close bond between mother and daughter. But then came the surprising part that really touched Meghan’s heart. “She said to me, ‘Mama, I see myself in you,’” Meghan shared, her voice soft but filled with emotion.
The 42-year-old Duchess paused and reflected on her daughter’s words. “She was speaking so literally,” Meghan added, chuckling at the simplicity of it. However, Meghan’s interpretation of the statement was deeper than it seemed. “Yes, I do see myself in you, and you see me in you,” Meghan thought, feeling the emotional weight of the exchange.
In that brief but powerful moment, Meghan shared a glimpse into her personal life as a mother, revealing the complexity of her feelings toward motherhood. It wasn’t just a mother-daughter exchange, but a reminder of the deep, unspoken connections we share with those we love.
And for Meghan, this moment was a powerful reminder that despite all the challenges of her new life, the love and bond with her children remain at the heart of everything.
