A Heartbreaking Search for Joshua: A Mother’s Nightmare
In the peaceful town of Coos County, Oregon, a mother named Angela German faced a nightmare that no parent should ever have to endure. It all began on November 9, when Angela decided to take a much-needed nap with her 5-year-old son, Joshua James McCoy.
She thought it would be a short rest, but when she woke up nearly five hours later, her heart sank—Joshua was missing.
Angela had fallen asleep around 1 p.m., and when she opened her eyes at about 5:30 p.m., the world around her felt like it was crumbling. The Coos County Sheriff’s Office quickly got involved, explaining that Joshua, who had autism, had wandered off while she slept.
As night fell, the panic grew. “Every minute matters,” the Missing Kids organization warns.
“Children on the autism spectrum may wander or go missing at a rate higher than other children. They may be trying to escape overwhelming stimuli like bright lights or loud sounds, or simply seeking out places of special interest to them that may calm their anxiety.”
Angela was frantic. She told the police that Joshua had a cellphone, but when they tried to track it, they found no useful information. The authorities immediately sent out alerts to the community. Joshua was described as a small boy, about 3 feet 6 inches tall, and he responded to the names “Josh” or “Joshie.”
However, they warned that he might not respond if someone called out to him.
The police were concerned that too many people searching for Joshua could interfere with the investigation. “The concern is that evidence would be missed or tainted with an overwhelming number of personnel on scene,” the sheriff’s office stated. Angela felt helpless, her heart racing as she imagined her son alone and scared.
The Search Intensifies
The next morning, the search for Joshua intensified. The sheriff’s office shared a Facebook update, saying, “Efforts intensified using drones, deputies, overwatch, and detectives…
Some clues were found, but nothing definitive.” They even drained a nearby pond, hoping to find any sign of him, but unfortunately, nothing of interest was located.
As the days passed, the community rallied together, hoping for Joshua’s safe return. On November 11, the authorities activated CORSAR, a collaborative search and rescue effort involving seven counties in Oregon and California.
They deployed 61 ground personnel, aerial support, and K9 units to help in the search. Angela held onto hope, praying for her son. “Please, let him be okay,” she whispered, her heart heavy with worry.
Despite the massive search effort, time slipped away. Then, on November 12, the unthinkable happened. Around 12:30 p.m., the police made a heartbreaking announcement: Joshua had been found, but he was no longer alive.
“It is with immense sadness that we have to report that missing Joshua McCoy has been found deceased,” the police stated. They explained that Joshua was discovered approximately 1.6 miles from his home, nearly 2 miles by road.
Angela was devastated. The world around her felt dark and empty as she processed the loss of her beloved son. Joshua’s father, Lawson Amos McCoy, who lived in Ohio, shared his grief on Facebook, posting an adorable photo of Joshua and writing, “My precious baby! Bless you my love.
I’ll miss you the rest of my life.” His words echoed the sorrow felt by so many who knew and loved Joshua.
The investigation into what happened to Joshua is still ongoing, and police have said they will not release any more information at this time. The community mourns the loss of a bright young boy, and many are left wondering how such a tragedy could happen.
