Being the parent of a proud, disrespectful teenager isn’t easy, and parents often have to try different ways to discipline their kids.
One mother, Heidi Johnson, found herself at her wit’s end with her 13-year-old son, Aaron. So, she decided to write him a letter—and posted it on Facebook, thinking only her friends would see it. Little did she know, the post would explode in popularity. Although it wasn’t meant to be public, Heidi doesn’t regret posting it for everyone to see.
In the letter, Heidi scolded her son for acting like she was just his “roommate” instead of his mother. She didn’t stop there though. She gave Aaron a detailed bill, listing over $700 in expenses for things like food and rent. Her message was clear: If Aaron wanted to treat her like a roommate, then she would treat him the same way.

She ended the letter with a simple, “Love, Mom,” because at the end of the day, she deeply cares for her son. After the letter went viral and people started talking about it, Heidi wrote another post to explain the situation further. Some parents had criticized her harshly, thinking she was being too extreme. She reassured them by saying, “I am not going to put my 13-year-old on the street if he can’t pay his half of the rent.”
She added, “I don’t want him to actually make any payment. I just want him to understand the blessings and gifts he has, and to take pride in his home.”
The truth is, Heidi never intended for Aaron to pay up. What she wanted was for him to understand “what things cost” and to realize what life would be like if she was only a “roommate” and not his mom. This wasn’t about the money at all—it was about teaching him a lesson in appreciation and respect.
Heidi also revealed the real reason she wrote the letter. Aaron had lied to her about doing his homework, and when she confronted him about it, he responded smugly, “Well, I’m making money now.”
Aaron was referring to the small amount of money he was earning from his YouTube channel, but Heidi knew that wasn’t nearly enough to cover his real expenses like rent or food. His attitude had pushed her to take a stand and show him the reality of his situation.
Despite the letter and all the attention it got online, Heidi made it clear that her relationship with Aaron hadn’t been damaged. “He and I still talk as openly as ever,” she said, adding that her son had apologized multiple times since then.
Since posting the letter, Heidi has found herself in a new role—offering advice to other parents who are dealing with similar challenges. “People feel comfortable coming to me and asking for advice, venting, or just having someone listen to their experience,” she shared. “It seems like my post has opened a door.”
Through her tough-love approach, Heidi not only taught her son a valuable lesson, but also became a source of wisdom and support for other parents in need.
