Mia woke up to an odd noise and found two squirrels in her window. The cute little rodents were tucked into the corner of the doorway.

She could watch the squirrels for hours. She loved their adorable faces, especially when they slept.

But when Mia took a closer look, she got the shock of her life.

Mia, 44, was having a great start to her day. She had her first good night’s sleep in years, not waking up until after seven. Her son was skiing with her husband, giving Mia a week of freedom. She could do whatever she wanted. Who wouldn’t want that?

Even after just one day, Mia was enjoying herself. But her independence wouldn’t last long.

It felt amazing to wake up without any chores. It reminded Mia of her college days when she could stay in bed all day, maybe order breakfast, and watch Netflix. The house was quiet and peaceful. “I’ll take a nap before eating,” she thought sleepily. She turned over and closed her eyes again.

Suddenly, Mia woke up. “What was that?!” she exclaimed. The noise stopped, and she turned back around. “It was probably nothing,” she thought. But then she heard the noise again.

It was a strange, high-pitched sound. Now she was sure it was close by. She listened carefully. “It’s coming from the window!” she realized. She got out of bed and went over to the window.

Two small squirrels were napping in a nest. That’s where the noise was coming from. Mia hadn’t noticed the squirrels building a nest there because the curtains had been closed for weeks. “I have to get this on camera,” she thought excitedly. She grabbed her camera and started taking pictures of the adorable squirrels. She couldn’t believe her luck.

Inside the nest, the two baby squirrels cuddled together. Mia watched them sleep peacefully. She wished she could open the window and pet them, but it was stuck.

Mia shook her head, trying to capture the perfect shot. “Their mother must have gone to find food,” she thought. She really wanted a good picture of their cute, sleepy faces.

But then, Mia started shaking. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing. “This has to be a joke,” she muttered. “I hope I’m wrong.”

With trembling hands, she zoomed in with her camera. She saw it again. Her face turned pale. She didn’t know what to do. She couldn’t look away. She had never seen anything like this before.

“Why does this happen when my family is away?” she wondered. “I need to call them before it’s too late.” She reached for her phone and called her husband.

She hoped he wasn’t out skiing. Thankfully, he answered. Mia quickly explained everything. Her husband listened carefully and reassured her. “Stay calm and wait for help,” he said.

Mia watched out the window as the paperboy delivered the newspaper. She called the police, but they said it would take at least ten minutes to arrive. “Why can’t you come sooner?” she asked anxiously.

Mia waited by the window, feeling helpless. She loved being independent, but this time she needed help. A few minutes later, she heard the mailbox.

Mia hurried to the front door. Her family gathered and read the newspaper article aloud:

Last week, Mia discovered a squirrel nest in her home. The baby squirrels were in danger from an eagle perched on a nearby tree. Mia quickly called the authorities, and with the help of the fire brigade, the nest was saved.

The eagle flew away, and the mother squirrel returned to her babies. Thanks to Mia’s quick thinking, the squirrels were safe. Picture of the rescued squirrels above.

Mia’s attention had saved the day.
