My Little Daughter Prepared a Wishlist for Santa but Her Last Wish Made Me Question My Marriage

When my 5-year-old daughter, Lily, handed me her letter to Santa, I thought it would be filled with the usual requests: toys, gadgets, and sparkly things. But as I read her final wish, my stomach dropped.

It wasn’t for her; it was about her grandma and my husband. Her innocent words opened a door to something I wasn’t prepared to face, and it made me question everything I thought I knew about my marriage.

There’s something truly magical about raising a 5-year-old. Lily, with her big brown eyes and wild imagination, lights up my world. She has a way of turning even the most ordinary day into an adventure.

Whether it’s her endless stream of “why” questions or her fascination with how cookies bake in the oven, every moment with her feels like a new discovery. She’s my little joy, and watching her grow is like witnessing magic unfold before my eyes.

I’ve been married to Jeff for six years. We’ve built a solid life together, and he’s a wonderful dad. Lily absolutely adores him. I often find myself marveling at the way he plays tea party with her or reads bedtime stories.

He’s everything I ever wanted in a husband. Together, we’ve created a home full of love and laughter, and I truly believed our life was perfect.

As Christmas approached, Lily couldn’t wait to write her letter to Santa. It was a tradition we’d started when she was too young to even hold a crayon. I had always helped her, but this year, she was determined to do most of it herself.

“I’m a big girl now, Mommy!” she announced, proudly holding up a red marker with exaggerated seriousness.

I smiled as I sat beside her, ready to help if needed. As she scribbled, I watched with affection. Her list was just what I expected: a kitchen set, a camera like her friend James’s, and a smartwatch like Pam’s. Then, she added something that made me freeze in my tracks.

“I want Grandma to play with me, not with Dad.”

Her words hit me like a cold bucket of water.

“Grandma?” I asked, trying to keep my voice calm. “Do you mean my mom or Daddy’s mom?”

“Yours,” Lily said without hesitation. “She comes when I’m usually asleep, around three. One time, I woke up and heard her voice in your bedroom. Daddy was putting on his shirt, and when I asked Grandma to play, they said they’d already played, and she was leaving.”

My heart skipped a beat. I forced a laugh, trying to brush it off. “Sweetheart, you must’ve dreamed that. Grandma doesn’t—”

“No, I saw her,” Lily interrupted, her voice firm.

The confidence in her words planted a seed of doubt in my mind. Could it be true? Could something be happening between my husband and my mom? The thought was ridiculous, but the more I thought about it, the more it nagged at me. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right.

In the following days, little things started to bother me. My mom had been visiting more often, but only when I wasn’t home. I decided to call her one afternoon.

“Mom, why don’t you visit when I’m around? It’s been a while since we hung out.”

“Oh, I just stop by on my way home from work,” she said casually. “We’ll get together soon, honey.”

Her answers seemed normal, but the timing of her visits didn’t sit right with me. It always seemed to happen when I was gone.

Then there was Jeff. Lately, he’d been complaining of back pain, but he brushed it off as nothing serious. One day, as I was cleaning out a drawer, I found a nearly empty bottle of lavender massage oil hidden behind some socks.

“Where did this come from?” I asked him, holding it up.

“Oh, that’s your mom’s,” he replied nonchalantly. “She left it here.”

“For her back?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Yeah,” he shrugged. “She said it helps.”

I felt a chill run down my spine. The pieces didn’t add up. My mom’s frequent, unannounced visits, their quiet conversations that stopped when I walked into the room, Jeff’s sudden attentiveness to her… it all felt like something was being hidden from me.

One day, Lily casually mentioned that Grandma always came on Tuesdays, and that was the final straw. I couldn’t ignore my growing suspicions any longer. I decided to leave work early that Tuesday and see for myself.

My heart raced as I pulled into the driveway. The house was unusually quiet when I entered. I crept through the halls, my breath catching in my throat. I could hear faint voices from upstairs. My pulse quickened. I slowly crept up the stairs and paused outside our bedroom door, my mind racing with worst-case scenarios.

“That’s perfect,” I heard Jeff’s voice softly.

My stomach churned. Without thinking, I flung the door open.

What I saw wasn’t what I expected at all.

There, sitting on the edge of the bed, was my mom, her hands pressed gently into Jeff’s back. His shirt was off, but it wasn’t the scandalous scene I had imagined. It looked like a massage.

They both jumped when I opened the door, surprised to see me standing there.

“What are you doing here, Mom?” I demanded, my voice shaky.

Mom scrambled to pick up the bottle of lavender oil. “Brisa, it’s not what it looks like,” she stammered.

I could feel my anger rising. “Oh, so it’s not you sneaking into my house every afternoon to… play with my husband?”

“Brisa, calm down,” Jeff said, holding up his hands in defense. “It’s not like that at all.”

Mom sighed and set the oil down on the nightstand. “Okay, I’ll explain. I’ve been thinking about a career change. I want to become a massage therapist. Jeff’s back has been bothering him, so he agreed to let me practice on him.”

“What?” I stared at her, speechless.

“I didn’t tell you because I thought you wouldn’t understand,” she said. “When I told you I wanted to leave my job in law, you didn’t take me seriously. Jeff was the only one who supported me.”

I felt a wave of relief and embarrassment flood over me. “Why didn’t you just tell me?”

“I didn’t think you’d believe in me,” Mom admitted, her voice soft.

“I didn’t want to cause you any stress,” Jeff added gently.

I sat down, my head spinning. “Well, you could’ve saved me a lot of sleepless nights by just being honest.”

Mom took my hand, squeezing it gently. “I’m sorry, honey. I never meant to make you worry.”

In that moment, I realized how quickly I had jumped to conclusions. My mother wasn’t sneaking around behind my back—she was simply following her dream. And my husband wasn’t betraying me—he was supporting her.

That Christmas, we celebrated more than just the holiday. We celebrated new beginnings. Mom proudly announced she was enrolling in massage therapy school, and we all cheered her on. Lily got her dream kitchen set, and we spent the evening by the tree, sipping hot cocoa, feeling grateful for the love and trust that held our family together.

Looking back, I couldn’t help but smile. Sometimes, our imaginations get the better of us, but with love and understanding, everything works out. Christmas brought us closer together, and I knew we would face whatever challenges came our way, as a family.
