MY PARENTS MADE ME MARRY TO KEEP THE FAMILY BUSINESS, SO I PICKED A FARM GIRL JUST TO ANNOY THEM—BUT SHE OUTSMARTED US ALL.
I used to live a life most people would dream about—rich parents, big house, fancy cars. I didn’t care much about anything except my inheritance, the money that would come to me when my dad retired, and the family business. Honestly, I thought I was set for life, so I didn’t see the need to change anything.
But then, one day, my parents dropped a bombshell. They were sick of my bachelor lifestyle, and they told me that if I wanted to inherit the family business, I had to get married.
My dad was getting ready to retire, and he wanted to make sure that the business was in good hands. But they didn’t think I was serious enough about taking over, and they were worried that I’d waste everything away.
To say I was furious is an understatement. “I’m not ready for this! I’m too young to be tied down!” I thought. But deep down, I knew they had a point—I wasn’t exactly a model heir to the family empire.
However, I decided that I would show them who was boss. If I had to marry someone to get my inheritance, I would do it, but it wouldn’t be for love, and it wouldn’t be for them. It would be to make a point.
So, I came up with the perfect plan: I would find a farm girl, marry her, and make sure it annoyed my parents to no end. They’d be disgusted, and I’d get what I wanted. I wasn’t interested in finding someone I loved. No, this was about showing them that they couldn’t control me.
That’s when I met Mary. At first, I wasn’t sure she was the right one, but then I realized: she was perfect. She was from a small farm town, didn’t know anything about business, and didn’t seem to care about wealth.
She was simple, humble, and most importantly—she would drive my parents crazy. I could already hear their voices in my head: “She’s not good enough for you! She’s not from the right social circle!” The more I thought about it, the more I was convinced.
When my parents found out I was planning to marry someone like Mary, they were horrified. My mom immediately called me, demanding I change my mind. “She’s not the right kind of woman for you!” she insisted.
My dad wasn’t much better. “You can’t be serious about this,” he said. But I stood my ground. “It’s my choice,” I told them. “I’m getting married to Mary. And there’s nothing you can do about it.”
The wedding plans moved ahead, and everything seemed like it was going exactly as I planned. But then something happened that I never expected.
It all went down at a charity ball last week, an event where all the important people in town gathered. Of course, I took Mary with me, and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to show her off to my parents’ high-society friends.
But little did I know, Mary was about to steal the show in a way none of us saw coming.
As we walked into the ballroom, the mayor of the town, a man known for his charm and influence, came over to greet us. I figured he’d totally ignore Mary. After all, she was just a farm girl—what could she possibly have in common with someone like him?
I could already see the uncomfortable looks my parents were giving her. But to my complete shock, the mayor’s face lit up the moment he saw Mary.
“Mary!” he exclaimed, practically rushing toward her. “It’s been so long! You look absolutely radiant!” Then, to everyone’s surprise, he took her hand, bowed deeply, and said, “It’s an honor to see you again.”
I could see the shock on everyone’s faces—including my parents’. The mayor, the most important figure in our town, knew Mary—and it wasn’t just because she was my fiancée. He was genuinely excited to see her.
It turned out that Mary wasn’t just some farm girl after all. She had connections I hadn’t even known about. As the evening went on, more and more people came up to her, treating her with the kind of respect that left me speechless.
I was starting to feel like the small-town guy in a world of big city elites. Mary had outplayed us all. It wasn’t just that she knew the mayor. She knew people from all walks of life, and they respected her—more than they respected me, in fact.
The rest of the night was a blur. I watched as Mary charmed everyone, talked with businessmen and politicians, and even got invited to a private dinner with some of the wealthiest families in town.
My parents, who had been so worried about her not being good enough, were now scrambling to keep up with her.
I remember standing there, stunned, when my mom turned to my dad and whispered, “She’s something else, isn’t she?”
“She’s not what we expected,” my dad replied, his voice tinged with disbelief.
It was clear that Mary had played us all. I was no longer the one in control. She was the one calling the shots now, and suddenly, I realized that maybe, just maybe, I wasn’t the one who had made the perfect choice after all.
And as I stood there, surrounded by people who suddenly saw Mary for who she truly was, I couldn’t help but feel a little proud. My parents may have forced me into this marriage, but it looked like I had ended up with someone who was much more than I had ever imagined.
What started as a plan to annoy my parents had turned into something else—a twist in the game I hadn’t seen coming.
