Anyone who works on camera knows that the public can be unforgiving when it comes to their opinions. The rise of social media has made it so that people feel free to criticize others anonymously, and for journalists like Kristen Nicole, this is a reality of the job. But even she was surprised when viewers took issue with her baby bump.
Kristen, who anchors “Good Day Chicago,” was pregnant with her second child. She was a mom already, and like many working mothers, she was juggling her career and her family life. However, some viewers thought it was inappropriate for her to show her baby bump while anchoring the news.
It all started when Kristen was sitting behind the news desk, wearing a sleek blue dress that hugged her bump. According to AOL, it wasn’t long before complaints began to come in. But instead of letting the negativity affect her, Kristen decided to fight back with humor and confidence through a Facebook post.
“LET ME SAVE YOU SOME TROUBLE,” Kristen wrote, addressing her critics. “My email address is ***, but if you’re writing to tell me that you’re offended by the sight of my baby bump, don’t hold your breath waiting for a response. It’s not coming. I wear this dress probably once a month. No one has EVER had a problem with it. Wear it almost 8 months pregnant? Woah…disgusting, right? (insert massive eye roll).”
She didn’t stop there. Kristen had a direct message for the three viewers who emailed her complaints: Karen, Gene, and Sabrina. “Use your time better,” she said, urging them to spread kindness instead of negativity. “Pay someone a compliment. Do a good deed.”
She also took the opportunity to thank those who were supporting her, writing, “To everyone else who has sent messages of congratulations and well wishes, you are keeping me motivated through these last 6 weeks. We’re finally in the home stretch!”
Kristen’s post revealed that she had received three emails from viewers who were unhappy about her baby bump being visible in the form-fitting blue dress. One woman even accused Kristen of wearing a fake bump to boost ratings. Another viewer felt that Kristen should have chosen more typical maternity wear instead of a dress that showed her pregnant belly.
Despite the criticism, Kristen stood her ground. She wasn’t going to let the negativity from a few people ruin her excitement about her pregnancy. With her response, she sent a message to anyone who doubted her: Kristen Nicole was going to continue doing her job proudly, and she wasn’t going to hide her happiness just because a few people didn’t approve of how she looked.
