There is mourning in Monaco: Prince Albert and Princess Charlène must bid farewell to an important companion. In a statement from the Monegasque court, the sovereign mourns the death of physician Jean-Joseph Pastor, the former personal doctor of Prince Rainier.
Prince Albert, 67, and Princess Charlène, 47, are in deep mourning: Prince Rainier’s former personal physician, Dr. Jean-Joseph Pastor, has passed away at the age of 93. An official statement shared on the Prince’s Palace’s Instagram account expresses the sovereign’s deep regret over the loss.
Prince Albert and Princess Charlène Mourn a Distinguished Physician and Companion
“Prince Albert has learned with great sadness of the death of Dr. Jean-Joseph Pastor […], who served as the personal doctor to Prince Rainier. Dr. Pastor was the former head of the Cardiology Department at the Centre Hospitalier Princesse Grace, where a ward is now named after him. He helped shape the history of Monegasque medicine through his expertise and kindness,” the court’s statement reads.
As a co-founder of the Monaco Cardio-Thoracic Center, the physician dedicated his entire life to improving the health of others and promoting the medical excellence of the Principality. Moving words follow in the name of Prince Albert: “In this painful moment, Prince Albert extends his deepest sympathy to his family, his loved ones, and all those who had the honor of knowing him.” The statement also highlights that “His Serene Highness also honors the human qualities of Dr. Pastor, who devoted himself to the princely family, Prince Rainier, and Princess Grace.”

It is also emphasized that Jean-Joseph Pastor influenced Monaco’s political life through his forty-year membership in the National Council. “As a witness to the liberation of Monaco in 1944 and as a silent contributor to many other significant moments in our country’s recent history, he leaves behind a legacy rich in memories and achievements.”
