Throughout the year, royals from around the world have special appearances. GALA showcases the most beautiful moments and takes you along on the journeys of princes and queens.
The world’s royals know exactly how to make a great appearance. It’s not just about smiling, waving, and nodding—although that is certainly part of the etiquette! Monarchies present themselves at award ceremonies, charity events, state banquets, and on joint trips. It’s a diverse life, and GALA is delighted to accompany them. Most of the travels are undertaken by queens and kings, as well as crown princes and crown princesses, usually representing their country in a ceremonial role.
Royal Calendar 2025 – A Look Behind the Scenes
Monarchies are now something of a rarity. In Europe, there are currently twelve; worldwide, there are 43. Each of them carries out numerous engagements every year, meaning their calendars fill up very quickly. In this photo series, we show you what the various royal houses are up to throughout the year. Among the monarchies particularly in the spotlight are Spain, the Netherlands, and Sweden.
A Look at the Spanish Monarchy
Since 2014, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, along with their daughters Leonor, Princess of Asturias, and Infanta Sofía, have been at the forefront of the Spanish monarchy. Felipe succeeded his father, Juan Carlos, who played a crucial role in ending the dictatorship in Spain and paving the way for democracy and parliamentarism. The royal family fulfills many important duties throughout the year, with one of the highlights being the throne anniversary, celebrated annually on June 19. Inheriting the throne is no easy task, but Felipe and Letizia have long since found their stride, presenting themselves as a strong team despite their busy schedule. Other members of the royal family include Juan Carlos I, Queen Sofía of Greece, and Felipe’s elder sisters, Elena de Borbón and Cristina de Borbón, who also undertake official duties.
Special Warmth from Cool Denmark
Denmark boasts the oldest monarchy in the world, with roots reaching back to the Viking era. Despite its long tradition, the Danish royal house is anything but outdated. They place great value on modernity and progress, reflected in their engagements. Queen Margrethe II and her husband Prince Henrik, who passed away in 2018 at the age of 83, often appeared at diplomatic and charitable events. Since 2024, their eldest son, King Frederik, and his wife, Queen Mary, have taken over this responsibility. Along with their children—Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, and twins Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent—they represent the Danish royal house together.
A Blended Family in Norway
King Harald and Queen Sonja have led the Norwegian monarchy since 1991. Their son, Crown Prince Haakon, is next in line to the throne and regularly appears at official events, often accompanied by his wife, Mette-Marit Høiby. Together they have two children, Ingrid Alexandra and Sverre Magnus. From a previous relationship, Mette-Marit brought her son Marius Borg Høiby, who has made headlines in the past due to legal issues and serious accusations. Despite these challenges, the family remains united. Due to health concerns, Mette-Marit is expected to reduce her public appearances this year, while Crown Prince Haakon will have a busy schedule.
Not Just Blue Blood in Sweden
The Swedish royal family emphasizes a sense of normalcy and approachability. This is partly due to the fact that not all members have noble origins. All three children of King Carl XVI Gustaf and his German-born wife, Queen Silvia, married commoners. Crown Princess Victoria is married to Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip to Princess Sofia, and Princess Madeleine to Christopher O’Neill. In fulfilling their royal duties, they all show a very open and affectionate demeanor. This year, their schedule includes memorial services, meetings with various organizations, and of course, the Nobel Prize ceremony on December 10, 2025.
Lots of Joy in the Netherlands
A look at the Dutch monarchy is guaranteed to lift your spirits. Whether in new family portraits or at important engagements, this royal family radiates joy—thanks in no small part to Queen Máxima’s dazzling smile. Since 2013, King Willem-Alexander has been the head of the royal family, following the abdication of his mother, Queen Beatrix. He and Queen Máxima are increasingly accompanied by their three daughters—Amalia, Alexia, and Ariane—at official events.
