A mother made a difficult decision when she chose to divorce her husband after years of betrayal. Her choice cost her dearly, not just in the courts but in the eyes of her daughter, Kelly. She lost custody, and Kelly, influenced by others, began to view her mother as a bad person. Years later, Kelly would only reconnect with her mother when she needed money for college.
The woman had thought she was marrying into a dream. Her wealthy husband not only spoiled her but also extended his generosity to her family. Her parents were treated to luxurious gifts, her sister’s credit card debts disappeared, and her brother landed a high-paying job, all thanks to her husband’s influence.
Her in-laws, grateful for the man’s generosity, often stood by him, even during difficult times, including the first time he was unfaithful.
At that point, the woman had just given birth to Kelly and was heartbroken. She wanted to leave him but found herself under immense pressure from her family to stay. They told her it was best for Kelly to have both parents at home, and she reluctantly agreed, convincing herself that maybe she hadn’t been the best wife while she was pregnant.
But when Kelly was 12, the husband cheated again. This time, the woman was resolute. She filed for divorce, even though her in-laws and parents begged her to reconsider. They didn’t want a scandal, and her parents, eager to keep benefiting from her husband’s wealth, were especially against it. Still, the woman pushed forward.
Her husband fought back with everything he had, hiring the best lawyers and using the support of her own family against her. In the end, he won custody of Kelly, leaving the woman heartbroken. She did receive a good financial settlement, but it didn’t make up for the fact that her daughter was taken from her.
Despite the loss, the woman tried hard to stay in touch with Kelly. She wanted to be part of her life, but Kelly had been told by her father’s family and even her own grandparents that her mother was in the wrong. They painted her as selfish for divorcing her father, who they said was sorry for his mistakes. As Kelly grew older, she became convinced her mother was a horrible person and refused to have anything to do with her.
Kelly Comes Back – But Not for Love
During these painful years, the woman leaned on her best friend, Tina, for support. Tina was always there for her, offering comfort and advice when she needed it most. As time passed, the woman still reached out to Kelly, hoping one day her daughter would return, not out of anger but out of love.
Eventually, Kelly did reach out—but only because she needed help. Her father had been fired from his job and was facing a lawsuit from one of his employees. He had spent all his money and Kelly’s college fund was gone. Desperate, Kelly turned to her mother for financial assistance.
The woman agreed to help with Kelly’s grad school tuition but under one condition. Kelly had to sign a contract giving up her right to inherit from her mother. Over the years, the woman had formed a close bond with Laura, Tina’s daughter, who had become like a daughter to her. The woman wanted Laura, her goddaughter, to inherit the bulk of her estate.
The Conflict Between Mother and Daughter
When her family heard about this, they warned her that cutting Kelly out of the inheritance could destroy any chance of mending their relationship. But the woman wasn’t sure. “It hurt that Kelly’s first instinct was to ask for money,” she said. She didn’t want to feel like her relationship with Kelly was based on greed.
Now, she faces a hard choice. Should she leave everything to Laura, the goddaughter who had been there for her, or should she try to rebuild her relationship with Kelly, even though it seemed Kelly’s motivations were purely financial?
What would you do? Should a mother put her daughter’s actions aside for the sake of family, or is she right to prioritize the person who stood by her through the hardest times?
