The sad truth is that many underweight or emaciated dogs end up in animal shelters. It breaks my heart to see these poor creatures suffer until they are almost unrecognizable.
Despite being mistreated, some animals still have love and trust for people, while others shrink in fear when they see a rescuer. It’s hard to imagine what these terrified animals have endured.
I can’t fathom ever wanting to harm an animal. And I can’t understand how anyone could find any sort of pleasure in doing so.
That being said, I think dogs have a sixth sense that helps them tell the difference between good and bad people.
Those who work with animals know the importance of giving a neglected dog the chance to make contact. While it might seem natural to play with and pet a dog to reassure it, that’s not always the best approach.
Some people just can’t understand how a dog that has experienced cruelty might be scared of a stranger.
Take Edie, for example. This mixed-breed dog was abandoned and was scheduled to be euthanized in just a few hours. She was terrified of people, and it had been a very long time since anyone had shown her any kindness. Her fur was disheveled, and she looked severely malnourished. Only a true animal lover could give Edie another chance.
Watching the beginning of her rescue video is heartbreaking. Edie is so scared that she doesn’t know what to do. She shakes all over and barks because she thinks the man trying to help her is a threat.
But the man in the video manages to catch Edie and keep her from running away. He finally gets close to her.
What happens next is amazing. Edie starts to realize that this man’s intentions are good. She understands that he is there to help her, not hurt her. You can almost see the moment she realizes she won’t be put down.
