All I wanted for my 80th birthday was to see my daughter, so I decided to drive over to her house and surprise her. When she opened the door, she looked uneasy. “Dad, why are you here?” she asked, clearly caught off guard.
“I just wanted to spend my birthday with you,” I said, smiling. But her response wasn’t what I expected. “Dad, you can’t stay,” she replied. “I’m really busy right now.”
Feeling a bit hurt, I offered to just sit on the couch until she had some time. But she shook her head and said firmly, “No, Dad, you really need to go right now.” Not wanting to argue, I turned and headed back to my car, even though I didn’t want to leave.
As I was walking away, I heard some noises coming from inside the house. Worried, I glanced through a window and saw two strange people inside. My concern for my daughter grew, so I decided to call the police.
The officers arrived quickly and approached the house carefully. After a tense few moments, they came out with the two strangers in handcuffs.
My daughter ran out of the house, tears in her eyes, and hugged me tightly. “I’m so sorry, Dad,” she sobbed. “I was trying to protect you. Those men broke in just before you got here. I didn’t know what to do, and I didn’t want you to get hurt.”
I hugged her back, feeling a wave of relief. “It’s okay, sweetheart. I’m just glad you’re safe.”
After hearing our side of the story, the police assured us that the intruders would be dealt with. Despite how the day started, it turned out to be the best birthday I could have imagined, all because I got to spend it with my daughter.
