On my 80th birthday, all I wanted was to see my daughter, so I decided to surprise her with a visit. When she opened the door, she looked nervous and blurted out, “Dad, what are you doing here?”
I smiled and said, “I just wanted to spend my birthday with you.” But her response caught me off guard. “Dad, you can’t stay. I’ve got a lot going on.”
Feeling a bit hurt, I offered, “I can just wait on the sofa until you’re free,” but she shook her head and insisted, “No, Dad, you really need to leave right now.” Confused and a little disappointed, I reluctantly turned to go back to my car.
As I walked away, I heard strange noises coming from inside the house. My worry grew, so I glanced through the window and saw two strangers moving around inside. My heart raced, and fearing for my daughter’s safety, I quickly called the police.
Within minutes, the police arrived and cautiously approached the house. After a tense few moments, they came out with the two strangers in handcuffs. My daughter, tears streaming down her face, ran out to hug me.
“Dad, I’m so sorry,” she cried. “I was trying to protect you. Those men broke in just before you arrived. I didn’t know what to do, and I didn’t want you to get hurt.”
Relief washed over me as I held her close. “It’s alright, sweetheart. I’m just glad you’re safe,” I whispered, feeling the weight lift off my shoulders.
After we gave our statements to the police, who assured us the intruders would face justice, my daughter and I spent the rest of the day together. What started as a simple birthday visit turned into the most unforgettable birthday I could have ever imagined.
