Patrick Duffy’s Love Story: Heartbreak, Healing, and an Unexpected Second Chance
Patrick Duffy’s world fell apart in 2017 when his wife of over four decades passed away unexpectedly. For years, the actor believed he would never recover from the heartbreak. The love of his life was gone, and with her, a part of him seemed lost forever. Yet, in his seventies, when he least expected it, he found love again—proof that sometimes, even after unimaginable sorrow, life can surprise us.

A Love That Stood the Test of Time
For decades, Patrick Duffy, best known for playing Bobby Ewing on Dallas, shared an incredible love story with his wife, Carlyn Rosser. Their bond wasn’t just about romance; it was built on deep friendship, shared spirituality, and unwavering support. Married for 43 years, they built a beautiful life together, raising a family and navigating both triumphs and tragedies side by side.

Duffy’s journey with Carlyn began when he was just a college senior. She was a talented ballet dancer with the First Chamber Dance Company of New York, and she was ten years older than him. But the age difference meant nothing when they met. Duffy recalled the exact moment his life changed forever.

“I was an immature college graduate touring as a narrator with this dance production, and she was a beautiful ballerina, ten years older,” he said. “We met on the tour bus, and that was it—for life.”
Their love was instant, and it lasted a lifetime. The couple married in 1974 in a Buddhist temple, as Carlyn introduced Duffy to Buddhism, a faith that became a guiding force in their relationship. That same year, they welcomed their first son, Padraic.

Building a Life Together
Early in their marriage, the couple moved to New York. Life wasn’t easy in the beginning. Duffy pursued his acting dreams, taking roles in Off-Broadway productions while working as a carpenter to support Carlyn and their growing family. Carlyn, with her grace and resilience, never wavered in her belief in him.

His breakthrough came in the late 1970s. After working as a house painter to make ends meet, he landed his first big role as Mark Harris in the TV series Man from Atlantis. Then, in 1978, his life changed forever when he secured the role of Bobby Ewing on Dallas—a role that made him a household name.

As Duffy’s career flourished, his family continued to grow. He and Carlyn welcomed their second son, Conor, and life seemed perfect. But in 1986, tragedy struck when Duffy’s parents were murdered during a robbery at their tavern in Boulder, Montana. It was a moment that could have shattered him completely.

“When my parents were murdered, I went through all the emotions—shock, anger, everything—but I never felt disconnected from them,” Duffy later shared.
It was his Buddhist faith and Carlyn’s unwavering support that helped him endure the unimaginable pain. She was his rock, the person who kept him grounded when his world turned upside down. But in 2017, he faced an even greater loss—the sudden passing of his beloved wife.

Coping with an Unimaginable Loss
Carlyn’s death at 77 was a devastating shock. There had been no warning signs, no time to prepare. One day she was there, and the next, she was gone.
“My wife and I, in 48 years, we were always together,” Duffy reflected. “It was a surprise when she passed. There was no indication. So that was the big adjustment.”

Six months after her passing, Duffy took to social media to express his grief.
“On this day six months ago, my heart stopped, yet I live on as she wishes,” he wrote. “We will be together eternally. Thank you for the love and concern.”
His sons, Padraic and Conor, became his pillars of strength, though Duffy often felt it was his role to comfort them as well.

“My boys were there as stalwarts,” he said. “But I also realized that, as much as they were trying to buttress old Dad up, I’m probably more adjusted to this set of circumstances than they are.”
Despite his deep sorrow, Duffy found peace in the memories he shared with Carlyn.
“I feel close to her all the time,” he admitted. “What I miss most is her touch.”
He spoke of his gratitude for their time together, cherishing every moment they had.
“I have worked hard to make the best of life, and it’s been good to me,” he said.

By 2019, Duffy had settled into life as a widower. He still saw himself as a married man, deeply connected to Carlyn, even though she was no longer physically there.
“I can hear her. I can see her. I know what she would expect of me, and I try to live up to that,” he said.
For years, he believed that chapter of his life was over—that he had experienced the greatest love he would ever know. But life had other plans for him.

An Unexpected Second Chance at Love
Just when Duffy thought he would never love again, something unexpected happened. A simple reconnection changed everything.

In his seventies, Duffy found love again in the most surprising way. It wasn’t something he had been looking for. In fact, he had resigned himself to living out the rest of his life alone. But fate had another idea.
Duffy’s story is proof that love doesn’t have an expiration date. Even after experiencing the deepest heartbreak, life can still offer beautiful surprises. The memories of his life with Carlyn would always be a part of him, but he had also learned an important lesson—love doesn’t have to end, even when we think it has.

Sometimes, the heart has room for another chapter.
A Love Rediscovered in an Unexpected Chapter
Patrick Duffy never imagined he would fall in love again after the devastating loss of his beloved wife. For over four decades, Carlyn Rosser had been his partner, his best friend, and the love of his life. When she passed away in 2017, his world was shattered.

He had accepted that his heart would never belong to another. But life has a way of surprising us when we least expect it. At the age of 71, Duffy found happiness once more—with actress Linda Purl. Their love story unfolded in the most unexpected way, during the quiet days of the pandemic.
Years before, Duffy and Purl had been nothing more than casual friends. They had met through mutual friends, exchanged pleasantries at events, but had never grown close. Time passed, and they lost touch.
Then, during the early months of the pandemic, fate stepped in. They found themselves part of a group text chain with a mutual friend. At first, the group exchanged messages regularly, but as the days went on, the conversation slowed. One by one, people stopped responding—until only Duffy and Purl remained.
What started as simple chats turned into something deeper. They began talking more and more, sharing memories, stories, and laughter. Their conversations stretched late into the night, sometimes lasting for hours.

“We Zoomed every single night for at least two to three hours,” Duffy recalled. “We explored all our history, our past, our loves. We listened to music together and covered all that ground you normally cover over months of dating.”
Night after night, their bond grew stronger. Duffy found himself looking forward to their calls, his heart feeling something it hadn’t in years. It was as if love had quietly walked back into his life. But could it be real? Could a connection formed over a screen truly be something deeper? There was only one way to find out.
Duffy made a bold decision. He packed up his car and drove 20 hours straight to Purl’s home. He needed to see if what they had was real.
“I loaded up my car and ended up on her doorstep,” he revealed. “I had to know if what we were feeling was genuine. And from that moment, we were inseparable.”
Their love story wasn’t rushed. Purl described their journey as “a very Victorian process”—taking their time, building something strong before romance even came into the picture. And when it did, it felt right. It felt natural. It felt like fate.
Duffy, who had once thought he would never love again, was stunned.
“I never thought for a minute this would happen again,” he admitted. “I never thought I’d feel this way again.”
Their connection was so seamless that they even brought it into their professional lives. In 2021, they starred together as a married couple in a television movie. For Duffy, it was a completely new experience.
“It’s the first time in my entire career that I got up in the morning with my co-star and then walked to the set holding hands,” he said. “The chemistry works, offstage and on. And always being together and not being afraid to show affection was so enjoyable.”
This love, unlike the rush of youth, carried a maturity and depth that only comes with life experience.
“You get to a point where you think, ‘It’s all about her. How do I get her to smile?'” Duffy said. “We’ve eliminated all the trial and errors that happen in [younger] relationships. It’s all positive and lovely.”
Purl saw their love story as a message of hope. “Life is full of surprises, both good and bad. Patrick and I weren’t looking for this. We didn’t expect it or see it coming when our paths crossed. Don’t ever give up,” she shared.
But what would Carlyn, the love of Duffy’s life, think of his new happiness? Duffy had no doubt in his heart.
“I feel, quite honestly, that it is keeping with the desires of my wife—the fact that we are intended to be happy. So when it’s offered, think about it, do whatever you do, but don’t let it pass you up if it’s the right thing.”
In a 2023 interview, the couple reflected on their unexpected love story. When asked if he ever believed he would find love again, Duffy admitted he hadn’t.
“By then, I was 70, and I had a good 46-year marriage,” he shared. “I thought I was content, but then I realized, over the course of months talking with Linda, that being content is not the end goal in life for anybody.”

Purl, who had been married four times before, including a brief marriage to Desi Arnaz Jr., also never imagined this chapter of her life. “I certainly didn’t have an expectation of having a life partnership or a deeper relationship,” she said.

Duffy, with a twinkle in his eye, joked, “But she had no idea who she was dealing with!”

When asked about the secret to finding love later in life, Purl answered, “Every union is individual, but we laugh an inordinate amount of the time together, so that was a bonus. We also had a lot of common ground.”

Duffy added, “Also, at our age, both having been in previous long relationships, you’ve already overcome the whole prologue to a relationship, which makes starting a relationship later in life ten times easier. You’re starting in the final lap towards the winning line, not at the starting gate.”
And what about marriage? Could wedding bells be in their future? Duffy said nothing was imminent, but that anything was possible.

“Right now, this relationship is as deep and as meaningful as any relationship I have ever been in,” he said.
Their love continues to thrive. In November 2024, Purl shared a sweet Instagram post of the couple smiling together during a trip to Italy. Fans flooded the comments with love:
“Gorgeous Couple♥️,” one person wrote.
Another commented, “❤️❤️❤️such cuties.”

A third added, “Beautiful couple ❤️.”
A fourth wrote, “You’re a good looking couple. God bless! ❤️❤️❤️.”
