Shopping at Walmart is about to change in a big way. The retail giant is moving away from traditional price tags and switching to digital shelf labels, which they believe will be a “game-changer” for both employees and shoppers.
In early June, Walmart began testing this new technology at one of its stores in Grapevine, Texas. The trial went so well that just a few weeks later, Walmart announced plans to expand the digital labels to 2,300 of its stores over the next two years.
So, what’s the big deal about digital shelf labels? Right now, Walmart workers have to walk up and down the aisles every week, changing prices on new items, rollbacks, and other discounts. With digital tags, they can update the prices of thousands of items in just minutes using a mobile app.
Daniela Boscan, a Food & Consumable Team Lead in Hurst, Texas, said that these digital labels have completely changed how she works every day. “With the new DSL system, a price adjustment that would have taken an associate two days to update now takes only minutes,” Daniela explained.
“This efficiency allows us to spend more time helping customers and less time doing monotonous operations.”
The new labels also make it easier to find items on the shelves, whether they need to be restocked or are part of an online order.
However, with this new pricing system, some customers are wondering about the possibility of dynamic pricing—where prices could change frequently based on demand.
While it’s unclear how Walmart will handle this, the introduction of digital shelf labels is set to bring more efficiency and convenience to shopping.
