Barron Trump has always attracted attention. At 18 years old and towering at 6’7″, he stands out not only because of his height but also because of his quiet, private personality.
While many teenagers go through their lives in the public eye, Barron has spent most of his childhood away from it. Despite being the only child of President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, Barron has managed to stay largely out of the spotlight—until now.
Barron has always been a bit of a mystery to the public, but there’s more to his story than people might think. From being a bilingual child to loving soccer and getting ready for college, Barron’s journey is anything but ordinary.
A Surprising Announcement
When Melania Trump found out she was expecting her first child with Donald, it came as a surprise to both of them. The couple, who had only been married for a little over a year, was still settling into their life together when they got the news.
Melania recalled the moment she told Donald that he was going to be a father: “He came home, and I told him he was going to be a father,” she said. At first, Donald was surprised, but his surprise quickly turned to joy.
Donald, however, wasn’t as shocked as it seemed. “I always thought I’d have children,” he said. “I just didn’t expect it so soon.” On March 20, 2006, after eight long hours of labor, Melania gave birth to their son, Barron William Trump. He arrived ten days earlier than expected, weighing 8.5 pounds and measuring 21 inches.
When Donald became a father for the fifth time, he couldn’t wait to share the news with the world. “Everything’s perfect. She’s really happy, and it’s fantastic,” he told reporters. Barron’s birth marked a fresh start for Donald, along with his four children from previous marriages.
A Public Debut
Barron’s first appearance on television was just two months after he was born, when Melania and Donald appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show. The couple spoke about their new life as parents and gave fans a glimpse of their baby.
Donald praised Melania for being a great mother, and Melania shared a funny story about how Donald and Barron had a special morning routine. “Despite his busy schedule, Donald made time to spend mornings with Barron,” Melania explained.
During the interview, the couple also talked about how they chose Barron’s name. Donald shared how he had always loved the name but was initially unsure about it. “I’ve always loved the name Barron,” Donald said. “But when I suggested it to Melania, she loved it right away. Later, I thought about changing it, but Melania wouldn’t let me. She said, ‘I’ve been calling him Barron in my stomach; you can’t change it now.’”
Moving to the White House
In 2015, when Donald announced his presidential campaign, the idea of moving to the White House became a very real possibility for the family. But Barron wasn’t thrilled about the idea of leaving his life in New York City.
According to Donald, Barron was nervous about moving away from his friends. To reassure him, Donald explained how being president could help him make a difference, especially for children like Barron. “That idea made him happy,” Donald said, and it helped Barron feel more excited about the move.
Melania, as a devoted mother, played a hands-on role in Barron’s upbringing. She made sure to support his education and encourage his interests. Barron was particularly interested in subjects like math and science, and Melania was always there to help him with his schoolwork. “He dreams of being a golfer, a businessman, a pilot,” she said in 2015. “At this age, it’s about exposing him to possibilities.”
Being from Slovenia, Melania made sure Barron stayed connected to his heritage. He often spoke with his grandmother, Melania’s mother, in Slovenian. However, Melania also agreed with Donald that learning English was important for living in the U.S. “I think speaking more languages is great,” Melania said, “but in America, you speak English.”
A Teenager Like No Other
As Barron grew older, one thing became very obvious: he was incredibly tall. At 6’7″, he towers over both of his parents. Donald couldn’t help but make jokes about Barron’s height, especially when they were at public events.
At one point in Iowa, Donald joked, “He got that tall because he only ate her cooking,” referring to Barron’s late maternal grandmother, Amalija Knavs, who was a key figure in his life. The crowd laughed, but it was clear that Barron’s height had become a topic of fascination.
Despite his towering stature, Barron has shown little interest in playing basketball, a sport that might seem like a natural fit for someone of his size. Donald admitted he had once tried to encourage Barron to pursue basketball, but Barron had other ideas. “I prefer basketball with that height,” Donald remarked. “But you can’t convince them of everything.
Barron’s an extraordinary kid.” Instead of basketball, Barron has always been passionate about soccer. Over the years, he’s worn jerseys from well-known teams, including Arsenal. In 2018, Barron even had the chance to meet soccer legend Wayne Rooney at the White House, proving that soccer is his true love.
