Losing a loved one is something everyone goes through, and it can affect us in many different ways. One fascinating part of grieving is having dreams about the person who has passed away. These dreams, often called “visitation dreams,” can feel very significant and comforting to those who experience them.
Patrick McNamara, an associate professor of neurology and psychiatry at Boston University, has done a lot of research on dreams, especially visitation dreams. He explains that it’s not unusual to have dreams where the deceased appear healthy and happy.
Even McNamara, who had such dreams after losing his parents, sees them as evidence of life after death. He believes these dreams help people deal with their grief.
Studies show that dreams about lost loved ones are not only common but also very meaningful. They often involve revisiting old memories, seeing the deceased in good health, or receiving messages from them. These dreams can play a crucial role in the healing process.

A 2016 Canadian study looked at middle-aged people who had recently experienced a major loss. It found that 67.1% of participants felt a stronger belief in an afterlife after having dreams about the deceased. These dreams also deepened their sense of connection to their lost loved ones.
Jennifer E. Shorter, a psychologist at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, has also studied the connection between dreams and waking life. She notes four main features that make visitation dreams different from regular ones:
the deceased often appear younger or healthier, they comment on their well-being, the message is more mental than emotional, and the dream has a feeling of peace and order.
While it’s hard to say exactly how common visitation dreams are, as they are a deeply personal experience, they can provide comfort, assurance, and a sense of ongoing connection with lost loved ones.
The true nature of these dreams is still a topic of debate, but they offer a unique perspective on how people cope with loss.
