There’s no bond like the one between a mother and her child. A mother’s love is unconditional, and nothing can change that. One young mother made a decision that would change her life forever when she was faced with a difficult choice during her pregnancy.
This is the inspirational story of a mother who, despite being told to end her pregnancy, chose to give her baby a chance at life. Keep reading to find out how her choice impacted her and her family in ways she never imagined.
Every mother wants what’s best for her child. They hope for a healthy pregnancy and a safe delivery, where their little one can grow and thrive. For Courtney Williams Baker, this hope remained strong when she went in for her routine prenatal visits. However, during one of those visits, she received news that would change everything.
At one of her doctor’s appointments, Courtney was told that her baby had Down syndrome. The doctors suggested that she consider ending the pregnancy. But Courtney and her husband were determined to give their child a chance.
They made the decision to continue the pregnancy, and when their daughter, Emersyn, was born, they embraced her with love, no matter what.
Years later, when Emersyn was two years old, Courtney felt the need to write a letter to the doctor who had advised her to terminate the pregnancy. She wanted to share her thoughts and emotions after all they had been through. She began the letter by talking about a friend of hers who had a very different experience with her pregnancy.
Courtney wrote, “A friend recently told me about her pregnancy. She said that her prenatal specialist always told her, ‘He’s perfect,’ whenever he saw her baby during the sonograms.” Courtney then went on to share how her experience was very different.
“When I went to see you, you looked at my son, who has Down syndrome, and said, ‘I told you,’ pointing at him. You told me he was perfect too, but I couldn’t help but feel devastated by your words.” She was happy for her friend but also felt deep sadness because she wished she had been given the same kind of care and support.
Courtney continued her letter with an honest reflection of how hard it had been for her during that time. “I wish you had been the kind of doctor who offered kindness and support. When I came to see you, I was filled with fear, uncertainty, and complete despair.
It was the hardest time of my life. All I wanted was for you to tell me the truth about my baby, the one thing I didn’t know yet. But instead, you suggested we end the pregnancy. You questioned if we understood how difficult life would be with a child who had Down syndrome.
You even asked us to reconsider carrying the pregnancy to term.”
For Courtney, this conversation was the beginning of a painful journey. “From that moment on, we dreaded our appointments,” she wrote. “You never gave us the truth we needed, and it made those days feel almost unbearable. But what I’ve learned is that my child is flawless.”
As she wrote the letter, Courtney reflected on the joy Emersyn brought into her life. “You see, Emersyn has touched the hearts of thousands of people, not just our family. She has brought more smiles, more laughter, and sweeter kisses than we ever dreamed possible.
She has given us a purpose, a joy, and a love that words can’t fully express. Emersyn has helped us see true beauty in the world and what it means to love unconditionally.”
Courtney’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength of a mother’s love. No matter the challenges or obstacles, she chose to give her daughter the life she deserved.
Emersyn’s arrival changed her family’s world in ways they never expected, filling their hearts with happiness and making them stronger than ever.
