All brides dream of a perfect wedding day, but there are some things you can control, like the dress, the venue, and the food. Yet, it’s not always possible to make sure everything goes smoothly.
This bride had a clear vision for her wedding. However, she soon realized not everyone shared her vision. Want to know what happened? Keep reading!
A bride-to-be posted a question on Reddit: “Am I being unreasonable?” She shared her story on the popular “AITAH” (Am I The Asshole) forum.
She explained that after she and her fiancé sent out a list of rules to their wedding guests, people started canceling. Before diving into the rules, she made it clear that her fiancé was just as involved in creating them, so no one could say she was a “bridezilla.”
First, the couple wanted an “unplugged” ceremony. This meant no phones allowed during the ceremony or the dinner unless there was a “huge” emergency. While most guests were okay with no phones during the ceremony, many thought banning phones during dinner was too much.
Some parents argued they needed their phones to check on their kids at home, but the bride was firm. “Checking on your kids is not an emergency,” she wrote. “You’ll know if something significant happens.”
The couple also enforced a strict dress code. Men had to wear tuxedos, women had to wear dresses, and everyone had to wear black. No exceptions. Not even for her aunt, who had recently lost her husband and felt wearing all black made her sad. Nor for her future sister-in-law, who struggled with body dysmorphia and felt uncomfortable in dresses.
Bridesmaids were told to keep their weight stable, whether it meant eating more or less, and their dresses were ordered months in advance.
The bride’s mother was furious about these rules, saying the wedding was doomed. Bridesmaids threatened to back out, and guests canceled last minute.
The maid of honor’s daughter was supposed to be the flower girl, but this plan fell apart too. The maid of honor decided to leave her daughter with her mom instead of following the bride’s rule to keep the flower girl at a hotel with a babysitter during the ceremony. This was because the wedding was four hours away for them.
Despite the bride’s efforts to explain, people continued to think she and her fiancé were being unreasonable and definitely “assholes.”
Many Reddit users pointed out that while a couple can set their wedding rules, guests have the right to decline and not follow them.
In the end, Reddit users almost unanimously agreed that the couple’s demands were ridiculous.
