You’ve probably been there before. At the last minute, you decide to take a slightly different approach than usual. You make a change to your coffee schedule or leave work a little early. Even the slightest change to your daily schedule can have a significant impact.
You might unexpectedly reconnect with a long-lost friend or discover your partner’s infidelity. Sometimes the changes are small, but other times, they are enormous.
Just like what happened to Malissa Sergent Lewis one summer day when she chose a different route to work.
One morning in the summer of 2016, Malissa was running late for her job at a Kentucky elementary school. To save time, she decided to take a side route instead of the main highway. That decision changed everything.
While driving on the quiet road, she noticed something unusual—a trash bag that seemed to be moving.
“Did I just see that garbage bag move?” Malissa asked herself as she passed by. She was curious and concerned, so she decided to stop and check it out.
She got out of her car and cautiously approached the bag. As she got closer, she could see it was indeed moving. The bag was tied up, which meant whatever was inside didn’t end up there by accident.
Malissa carefully tore a corner of the bag open to see what was inside. To her shock, she found a young puppy. The moment he saw light, his tail started wagging furiously.
“He was so happy to see me,” Malissa told The Dodo. “I couldn’t believe someone had left him like that.”
The puppy, wearing a collar but no identification tags, had been dumped in the middle of the road. Malissa couldn’t bear to leave him there, so she took him with her to work.
Malissa’s son later came to pick up the puppy and take him home. They brought him to the vet for a check-up and vaccinations. The poor pup had no idea how he ended up in that trash bag on the side of the road.
Worried the puppy might have been stolen or abandoned, Malissa contacted animal control. However, no one came forward to claim him, and he wasn’t reported lost.
Fortunately, Malissa and her family decided to adopt the puppy. Now, he gets all the love and care he needs. Still, Malissa couldn’t shake the thought of who could do something so cruel.
“Who could harm an animal in such a way? No matter who you are, everyone has a puppy. Putting an animal, any animal, in a garbage bag and dumping it on the side of the road is a real coldhearted person,” Malissa said to The Dodo.
Malissa’s story is a reminder that even small decisions can lead to big changes and sometimes, incredible rescues.
