People often say that today’s kids don’t respect their elders, and in some cases, that might be true. Young people should appreciate those who helped shape the world we live in today. But that’s not always the case—many young people do kind and thoughtful things every day that deserve more attention.
Here’s a story that proves it. I hope that by sharing this, we can spread the word and inspire others to do the same.
In 2018, an 18-year-old named Evoni Williams was working her usual shift at a Waffle House in Houston. It was just another day at work until she noticed an elderly man sitting at the counter. He was using an oxygen tank to help him breathe and was struggling to cut his food.
Without a second thought, Evoni stepped in to help him, realizing that his hands just weren’t as steady as they used to be.
A customer named Laura Wolf was sitting nearby and saw what Evoni did. “She took his plate and started cutting up his ham without hesitation,” Laura wrote.
Moved by this simple act of kindness, Laura took a photo and posted it on Facebook, saying, “To him, this may seem small, but I’m sure it was huge. With everything in this world looking so terrible, I’m thankful to have seen this gesture of love and care to start my day.”
Within a week, Evoni’s act of kindness went viral. Over 40,000 people shared the story on Facebook, and it quickly caught the attention of the Texas Southern University. They were so impressed that they offered Evoni a $16,000 scholarship.
For Evoni, who had just graduated from high school and was working at Waffle House to save money for college, this scholarship was life-changing.
Despite all the praise she received, Evoni stayed humble. She told the Houston Chronicle, “I didn’t know the photo was taken until a couple of hours later.”
When asked why she did it, the 18-year-old simply said, “It’s just something I would do for anybody when I saw it. It was the right thing to do.”
Stories like this warm the heart and remind us that the world needs more people like Evoni, who go out of their way to help others. It’s amazing that her small act of kindness led to such a big reward.
Please share this story on Facebook. It will encourage more people to spread kindness in their everyday lives.
